The project began in 1972. The behavioral scientist has built a space that cares about rodents’ well-being and increases their productive life. In this way, the castle where the mice lived was created, a square habitat of about 2.5 meters long closed with walls 1.3 meters high and without shaking.
The first 0.9 cubic meters of walls were built so that mice could climb, although they were not allowed to escape thanks to the remaining 0.4 meters of grandfather height
Each wall had up to 16 vertical grids of tunnels (or stairs). Four horizontal passages lead to each drawer, which in turn leads to four boxes or nests.
That means there were a total of 256 boxes, each capable of accommodating fifteen mice. In terms of supply, the mice had plenty of food, water, nesting materials, and luxury.
Colony Universe 25 was cleaned up every four weeks, there were no predators threatening rodents, and the temperature remained constant at 20 degrees.

But the wind runs what ships don’t crave, experience has shown the stark truth of what can happen in a densely populated environment where there are unlimited resources, in this case with mammals. The experiment began with four pairs of disease-free mice, four males, and four females.
104 days after starting, the mice began to conceive. Another 300 days later, the mice had already reached nearly 600 different rapes in the colony. By day 560 of the experiment, the number of rodents had already peaked at about 2,200 at which point the number of rodents began to decline. What happened next?
What happened in the experiment was a population decline, and it happened because of the massive reproduction, overpopulation wiped out society.
There was no place for everyone and the mice began to kill each other and there was a major change in behaviors to declare the end of the rat colonies.
When they reached peak reproduction, most mice spent every second and minute of their lives with hundreds of others. Yes, they met as at the beginning in the boxes and boxes created, but unlike the beginning, they only did it waiting to feed them.
Those moments turned into increasingly violent situations, mice attacked each other, an area that started with “large” areas for a few items became a suffocating space where they struggled to stay in their “zone.”
Males with increased stress have stopped having children, which Calhoun concluded as a lack of female attractiveness themselves. As the numbers of pregnant females have dropped significantly, those born simply abandoned their babies.
Results of Universe 25 Experiment:
And so the 600th day of the Universe 25 experiment was reached, the day the colony was truly extinct. Few mice survived the social collapse, there were no small mice, no pregnant mice, and no chance of reproduction because they lost every trace of social interaction. This cruel experience itself was a success. As Calhoun explained:
In a way, these creatures were no longer mice long before they died, the “first death” that deeply destroyed the soul and society itself as the “second death” of the physical body, losing the desire to live, bond, and communicate among themselves.
It was a terrifying experience but food for thought. The mice had everything to survive, everything but space or space. Which caused a social collapse that affects the layers of each mammal, breaking the personality of each from within.
